Secure Online Payments | How is Flutterwave Safe?

article feature image

You work hard for your money, and when it comes to making payments you want to be sure that you are not leaving sensitive information on any platform that can be used against you in the future.  It’s why you might be averse to using your debit or credit card to make payments.

You’re right to be wary of this, in fact, you should be very vigilant when it comes to paying for transactions online or offline. We want to put your mind at ease, so here are the different ways we ensure that your details are safe and secure when you pay through Flutterwave or use any of our products.

Flutterwave is  PCI-DSS Level 1 Certified

What does this even mean? We’ll explain.

PCI-DSS stands for The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (a mouthful, we know) and it basically refers to a set of standards that ALL companies that process, store or transmit cardholder data have to adhere to.

It’s a global set of standards and there are 4 possible levels of PCI-DSS certifications that a company can acquire, Level 1 being the highest.

This means that we have acquired the highest standard of safety when it comes to processing your card information.

There’s more information on PCI Compliance and PCI-DSS certification here.

Additional licensing that secures your online payments

As a payments solution company there is a lot of t’s to be crossed and i’s to be dotted. So, here are some more details on licenses we have (it’s a little technical, but important).

We have a Money Service Operator’s License that allows us access to the Mastercard Payment Gateway Services System and enables us to process Mastercard and Visa transactions.

We’re ISO certified which means we’ve attained a high level of information security. Our payment gateway has a Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS) license.

Similarly, in countries we operate in like Nigeria, we’re licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Payment Service Solution Provider (PSP). The same applies to Ghana and other countries we’re licensed to provide payment solutions.

Two-factor authentication – your best friend (Also known as two-step verification or 2FA)

Two-factor authentication is exactly what you think it is – a two-step verification process on a user’s device or card that requires two levels of verification for you to carry our payment for a transaction. 3D Secure is an example of 2 step verification, its created by Mastercard and Visa (when you see Verified by Visa or Mastercard Securecode) and is basically a way that these card providers protect you as a customer with online transactions.

Every time you have to enter a one-time passcode even after you have entered your password or pin, it is an example of 2FA. 2FA is enabled on both Rave by Flutterwave and our retail product GetBarter.

Why did I get charged?

Sometimes due to delayed banking processes, you may get a late alert of a transaction you made before or you get a debit alert via text or email that says ‘Flutterwave’ and you are unsure where the payment is coming from. We have devised a quick and easy way for you to check the transaction through our disputes page.

All you need to do is enter the details of the transaction on the page (all your information is secure) and we will show you which merchant platform the charge came from.

Chargebacks

Sometimes you make a payment on a merchant website and you get no value i.e. no ticket, or your order never got delivered. We built a comprehensive Chargeback Management System for Flutterwave merchants to treat and handle chargebacks logged against them, it helps us be transparent with our merchants and you can be assured that there are measures in place to ensure you get value.

So, how safe is our app GetBarter?

You have probably assumed that GetBarter as a product runs on our core payment infrastructure. You are not wrong, in fact, you are right.

All payments through GetBarter pass through the security measures we have implemented for Flutterwave. We also verify your identity and have two-factor authentication (one-time passwords) for that extra layer of security.
